After Hearts’ defeat to Hibernian in the 2018 SWPL Cup First Round, we spoke to Hearts’ Head Coach Andy Enwood about his side’s performance.
“I’m extremely proud of my side. We obviously had a game-plan, it was quite visible to be deep, to be hard to break down and be compact and then try to see if we could knick anything on the counter-attack.
And I think there were times when we rode our luck but I think in the main, our defensive organisation was good and I’m proud of the work the girls have done to achieve that.
“We had a real good chance 30 seconds before half-time that we could have we could have been walking in 1-0 up after defending for most of the game. But I think certainly, for the latter stage of the second half, tiredness comes into play. The difference between the two teams and the number of times that they train, really, really showed.
“But I’ve just said to my players that our priority is the league and if we put the amount of effort and focus and work into our league games as we did today, then we will be in good shape.
“I think everyone watching the game would agree that the players did go to the end of the game, and I’ve said that character to do so and willingness to do so will be a real positive in our league games that come up. If we had given up then it would have been a concern for me. But the players showed the type of players they are, that they do want to go right to the end and play for the team.
“As much as we are disappointed, we are realistic about the challenge as well, but the players gave everything and I’m very proud of their efforts. I’m not going to say happy because there are still things we could have done better and ultimately we’ve lost a game of football – but I cannot fault the application and effort that they put into the game.”
