Edinburgh University Hutchison Vale (EUHV) and Hearts began their 2018 SBS SWPL 2 season with an entertaining 1-1 draw in a game that saw a penalty awarded and both sides having a goal disallowed. The game was exciting enough to warm up the spectators despite the freezing temperatures.
It was the home side that had dominated the early exchanges and they thought that they had taken the lead through debutant Yasemin Emek, but the officials ruled it out for offside. Two minutes later, it was Hearts who took the lead through a penalty that was calmly converted by Danielle Pagliarulo into the bottom-left corner.
And then, on the stroke of half-time, Hearts had a goal ruled out for a foul on the EUHV keeper Charlotte Parker-Smith.
Although Hearts started the second half strongly, EUHV equalised just after the hour mark through Anna Hume.
Neither side could find the winner in the remaining stages and had to settle for a well-earned point.
Hume Causes Hearts Problems
EUHV started on the front foot and created a superb chance in the opening ten minutes as a through-ball dissected the Hearts’ defence and found Anna Hume, but her shot from the edge of the box just went wide.
Hume was creating chances again and cut the ball back across the six-yard box, but no player could get on the end of it.
Hearts had given a debut to Laura Gavin and she came close to opening the scoring. She was able to take a touch in the box to set it up on her right foot but saw her curled effort tipped over by Parker-Smith. She came close once again minutes later with her shot beating the keeper but trickling agonisingly wide of the far post.
EUHV Disallowed Goal & Hearts Take The Lead
And then, EUHV thought they had taken the lead only to be disappointed by the officials. Chaos was caused after the Hearts’ keeper Ashley Watson spilt a cross, and when the ball was worked to the far post, Yasmein Emek tapped the ball into the back of the net – only for the assistant to signal she was offside.
Two minutes later, Hearts took the lead after Ashley Carse was brought down in the box. Danielle Pagliarulo stepped up, and calmly rolled the ball into the bottom-left corner, sending the keeper the wrong way.
EUHV looked for the equaliser and once again it was Hume who came close. A delightful ball from Leanne Forker picked out Hume in the box, and she had the time to control the ball but saw her shot saved low down at the near post by Watson.
Hearts Have Goal Ruled Out
On the stroke of half-time, Hearts had a goal ruled out after a Hearts player was penalised for a foul on Parker-Smith.
At half-time, EUHV made a double change, bringing on Margaux Durand-Watson and Jordan Doak – and changing from three at the back to four.
But it was Hearts who started the second half the stronger. Pagliarulo’s free-kick picked out Ashley Carse at the far post but she couldn’t get a strong enough connection on her header. And they Lynsey Anderson had a shot go just wide.
Hume Equalises For EUHV
However, in the 61st minute, EUHV scored the equaliser that their dominance had deserved, and it was no surprise that it was Anna Hume who scored. Nichola Sturrock’s pass picked out Hume in the box, and she was able to turn and pick out the bottom corner.
The game became tenser and it seemed like the next goal would likely come from a mistake. Hearts failed to clear a corner and Hume couldn’t direct her header properly and Lucy Stanton had a shot blocked – but Hearts cleared.
Then it was EUHV’s mistake that nearly led to a Hearts goal. Stacey Hutchison’s cross was only cleared to Ashley Carse and her shot just went wide.
And there was still enough time for both sides to have one more chance each. A Hume cross was cut out by Watson just before it found Krissy Williams who would have had a tap-in.
Then Hearts’ Jennifer Smith was given room to twist and turn on the edge of the box but was unable to find the target.
