Glasgow City found out their Champions League Round of 32 opponents today, drawing the Kazakhstan champions BIIK-Kazygurt.
The 10-time champions have a good European pedigree, and last season reached the Last 16 where they lost out to the eventual runners-up PSG. During that tournament, Kazygurt’s Gulnara Gabelia ended up as the joint-third top scorer – although, four of her seven goals came in the Qualifying Period.
Unlike Glasgow City who qualifies for the Round of 32 automatically, Kazygurt has already been in Champions League action this season. They won all three of their matches: beating Sporting CP, Hajvalia and the hosts MTK Hungaria.
City has reached the Quarter-Finals of the Champions League, back in the 2014-15 season, but in the past two seasons, they have been eliminated in the Round of 32 – by Chelsea and Eskilstuna United.
Originally, Kazygurt was known as Alma-KTZh and formed in Almaty, but was reformed in its current form in 2009 and has dominated the Kazak Championship in recent seasons.
Glasgow City will travel to Kazakhstan on the 4/5 October with the home leg to be played on 10/11 October.
