A late equaliser from Gemma Collier saw Forfar Farmington rescue a point against Hearts as they retained their unbeaten start to the season. The two pre-season title favourite met at King’s Park off the back of contrasting results last Sunday, with Forfar beating Glasgow Girls and Hearts losing to Motherwell.

But for a long period, it looked like Hearts would take all three points after Jennifer Dodds put them in front in the first half, having fired in Ashley Carse’s cross. Late on in the second half, Forfar put Hearts under siege and it looked like they would not find a breakthrough. But in the 88th minute, a free-kick was flicked on to Collier and her looping header found the back of the net.

Despite conceding the late goal, it will mean that Hearts are guaranteed to go a year unbeaten at home in competitive football – with their last defeat coming on the 1st May when they lost to Glasgow Girls.

Hearts remain in third whilst Forfar sit top of the SWPL 2 with a one point lead over Glasgow Girls.

Open Start

It was Forfar who had the better of the opening minutes with Kirsty Deans having a shot blocked by a Hearts’ defender and Nicola Davidson shooting over. But then, the game descended into a battle of the midfield as both sides struggled to break down each other’s defence.

However, in the 12th minute, the game’s first great chance fell to Hearts. Sharon Hughes broke down the right-wing and her early inswinging cross picked out Lauren Hall, but she could only shoot straight at Forfar’s keeper Fiona McNicoll.

Soon after, Forfar themselves had a glorious chance after winning a corner. After Hearts’ keeper Ashley Watson failed to claim the ball, it fell to Kirsty Deans at the far post but she failed to hit the target with her effort.

Worryingly for Hearts, they had to replace Hughes with Demi Summers in the 25th minute after she went down in the Forfar box. Hughes had tried to carry on, but eventually, it became clear she could not continue.

Hearts Take The Lead

Hearts should have taken the lead in the 27th minute when Ashley Carse’s cross found Jennifer Dodds who shot over from six yards.

Two minutes later, Hearts did take the lead. A quickly hit free-kick from Rachel Walkingshaw found Carse in space on the wing, she crossed to Dodds and she fired home from close range.

Late on in the first half, Forfar had a couple of good chances to equalise. After Watson spilt Robyn Smith’s cross, Cheryl Kilcoyne pounced upon the rebound and saw her effort saved by the keeper. And then, Deans’ curling shot was saved low down by Watson.

HALF-TIME: Hearts 1-0 Forfar Farmington

Forfar Start To Dominate

The second half had an open start, and it was Hearts who had the first chance. Having gone out of her box to take a free-kick, McNicoll was out of position when the ball fell to Carse, but her ambitious launch went wide.

Forfar then came close when a free-kick fell to Laura Parsley in the Hearts’ box, but she was denied by Georgia Hunter’s last-ditch tackle.

As the half wore on, it was the visitors who looked more likely to score. Kayleigh Noble’s corner picked out Megan McCarthy at the near post, but her header flew over the crossbar. Soon after, Deans shot over the bar from the edge of the box. Beth Shillitto chased down a clearance from Danni Paglirullo, the ball span high up in the air uncomfortably, but Watson managed to claim the ball.

Forfar Score Late Equaliser

In the final ten minutes, it was all Forfar with Hearts having to defend with their backs to the wall, and each time Forfar got close to getting a shot off, there was a Hearts’ defender to make the tackle.

However, the away side was still creating chances with Robyn Smith coming close with his curling shot just going wide of the far post.

And then, Forfar equalised. Demi Summers’ gave away a free-kick just inside Hearts’ half after a late challenge on Alison Debio. The ball was launched into the Hearts’ box by Nicola Davidson, Megan McCarthy flicked the ball on and Gemma Collier scored with a looping header.

Hearts could have scored a late winner when Carse broke into the box, but Katie Reilly couldn’t get her shot off after being picked out by the striker.
