Hearts moved up to second in the SWPL 2 after beating Jeanfield Swifts 2-0. This was a clash between two of the best attacking sides in the league last season, and the game was a tight encounter with both sides creating numerous chances. Jeanfield had more chances than Hearts, but far too often, they failed to test Hearts’ keeper Ashley Watson.
It took until the last kick of the first half for Hearts to take the lead through Stacey Hutchison’s half-volley, before mid-way through the second half, Hearts doubled their lead through Ashley Carse’s wonder-strike. Jeanfield came close to equalising when the score was 1-0, but Ellie Cowie’s shot was cleared off the line.
Jeanfield Swifts drop down to fifth place.
The game started in an even manner, but soon Jeanfield carved open the game’s first chance. Rebecca Foote’s through-ball sent Danni McGinley through on goal, but her shot trickled wide of the far post.
The match settled into an end-to-end manner, without either side carving out a glorious chance, but int the tenth minute, Hearts came close to scoring through Kara Kidd’s effort that was saved by Corry McLlavery-Davidson.
The home side was on top now and Kidd had a couple more great chances, failing to get her head to a Lynsey Anderson cross and hit the post with her shot after rounding the Jeanfield keeper. Soon after, Kidd had another one-on-one opportunity but missed the target with her attempt.
Jeanfield, though, were still posing threats going forward and Danni McGinley could have opened the scoring, but she saw her shot blocked by a Hearts defender.
Six minutes before half-time, they should have at least threatened the Hearts’ keeper Ashley Watson when Lauren Dunn was set up on the edge of the box, but she mistimed her shot wide. Soon after, Rachel Todd went close for Jeanfield but her curled effort from 25 yards just went wide.
But as the visitors felt like they were getting on top, Hearts took the lead with the last effort of the first half, coming from a free-kick won on the left-wing, near the corner flag. Michaela McAlonie curled the ball towards the far post where the unmarked Stacey Hutchison’s half-volley found the back of the net, despite the keeper’s valiant attempts.
Half-Time: Hearts 1-0 Jeanfield Swifts
Jeanfield started the second half strongly, but the closest they came in the first ten minutes was Todd’s long-range effort that just went wide.
Then Hearts came close to a second. Countering from a Jeanfield free-kick, Ashley Carse’s through-ball sent Kidd through on goal, she unselfishly cut the ball back to Hutchison who took one touch to set herself up, and then curled her shot just wide of the right post.
Just after the hour mark, Jeanfield should have equalised in a manner that was similar to Hearts’ opener. Jade McDonald’s cross picked out Ellie Cowie at the far post, but her shot lacked power and a Hearts’ defender reacted quickly to clear the ball off the line.
And then, Hearts doubled the lead with a stunning goal. Ashley Carse used her strength to hold off a Jeanfield defender, then exchanged a one-two with Kara Kidd before curling the ball into the top corner.
Jeanfield looked to pull a goal back and came close through Eilidh McIntyre’s shot from the edge of the box, but as the story of the game was for the visitors, the shot failed to test Hearts’ keeper.
In second half stoppage-time, Hearts really should have made it 3-0. McAlonie’s free-kick found Demi Summers, unmarked in the box, and her shot smashed off the underside of the bar, the ball bounced on the line and clear of the goal.
“Delighted. 3 out of 3. Jeanfield are a team that were promoted last year, did well in the league and it’s quite clear that they have consolidated their position I feel in the SWPL 2. The games we have to play again against them I’m sure will be difficult and sure they will be difficult opponents for the other teams in the league. So very happy to get the three points today. I don’t think we created as many chances as we have down in the last two home games, but you’re not going to create chance after chance every game, you just have to take them when they come along.”
[On the goals] “Stacey, one of her roles is to be in and around the box and score goals, that’s two on the trot for her. And everybody knows Ashley Carse has scored so many goals last year for us, and I hope she does again this season. The second was a fantastic goal, the link-up with her and Kara, just the wee one-two in the box and a fantastic finish.”
