The SWPL Cup Semi-Final draw has taken place and it produced a mouth-watering set of ties.
With the three favourites remaining in the competition, it was guaranteed that two of Celtic, Glasgow City and Hibernian were to meet in the Semi-Finals.
The two Semi-Finals will be played at Ainslie Park on the 30th April, with kick-off times to be confirmed.
Hibernian vs Glasgow City
Holders Hibernian meet Glasgow City in a repeat of the past three SWPL Cup Finals, guaranteeing that there will not be a Hibs-City Final in a Scottish top-flight cup competition since Glasgow City beat Spartans in the 2014 Scottish Cup Final.
Last season, Hibernian defeated Glasgow City in the Final thanks to Lizzie Arnot’s late goal as well as beating City in the SSE Scottish Cup Final on penalties.
This will be the meeting of the two most successful teams in the competition, with Glasgow City lifting the SWPL Cup six times whilst Hibs have won the tournament four times.
This means that neither side has yet to concede in this year’s competition.
Celtic v Spartans
Spartans host Celtic in the other Semi-Final. Both of the teams has won the competition one time before, but Spartans have reached the Final more often. In fact, Celtic beat Spartans in the 2010 Cup Final. The last time these two met in the SWPL Cup came in the 2012 Semi-Final where Spartans were 1-0 winners.
Whilst this game will undoubtedly get less attention than the City-Hibs game, it does not make it unexciting in any way. In the couple of games, I have seen of Spartans so far this season, they have looked impressive. Their attacking play has improved and their young side is full of exciting talent.
Celtic have had an impressive start to the season, drawing with Glasgow City in the league, and are looking like a side who can challenge for silverware this season. This will be a meeting of two quality SWPL 1 sides.
