The SWPL Cup holders Hibernian reached the Semi-Finals after they beat Rangers 5-0 with a highly impressive performance. Hibernian controlled the game from start to finish, never allowing Rangers to find a way back into the game.
They took the lead when Amy Gallacher tapped in Abi Harrison’s cross before Harrison got onto the scoresheet with a superb volleyed finish. Harrison’s cross picked out Lucy Graham who prodded in Hibernian’s third goal, just before half-time.
Abi Harrison scored her second goal of the game after turning in Lizzie Arnot’s cross before Harrison assisted Hibernian’s fifth and final goal scored by Katey Turner just before full-time.
The game started with both teams struggling to impose themselves on the match, but slowly Hibernian looked more and more dangerous with Lucy Graham’s long-range effort narrowly creeping over the crossbar. Then it was the turn of Emma Brownlie to go close, heading wide from a corner.
And then, Hibernian took the lead. Abi Harrison’s cut-back picked out Amy Gallacher who, despite pressure from the Rangers defence, managed to prod the ball into the net.
Hibs had a couple of chances to double their lead soon after with Harrison volleying wide and Graham having her shot saved by Rangers’ keeper Jordyn Elliot.
And then in the 16th minute, they did make it 2-0 after winning a free-kick just inside the Rangers’ half. Brownlie launched the ball into the penalty area where Harrison controlled the ball and then volleyed the ball over the keeper and into the net.
Hibernian kept on looking for their third goal with Harrison coming close to her second goal of the game with her looping header saved by Elliot, and then Elliot diving low down to deny Harrison’s powerful shot. Once again, Elliot manages to deny Harrison with a good save after her flicked finish from Lizzie Arnot’s cross.
Gallacher nearly scored her second goal of the game through a cross that nearly went in, but hit the far post.
And then in the 43rd minute, Hibernian finally scored their third goal. It came from a corner that Rangers failed to fully clear, and eventually, Harrison’s cross picked out Graham who prodded the ball home at the near post.
Hibs should have been 4-0 up just before half-time when Harrison saw her shot parried by Elliot, but when the rebound fell to the striker she scuffed her shot wide.
Half-Time Hibernian 3-0 Rangers
Hibernian could have scored in the second minute of the second half with Lizzie Arnot’s long-distance shot, but Elliot managed to make a great save.
And then it was 4-0. Arnot broke to the byline when she put a delightful cross into the six-yard box where Harrison tapped the ball into the net.
In the SWPL 1 game earlier this month, Hibernian allowed Rangers a way back into the game after going 4-0 up, but they didn’t make the same mistake as they continued to control the game. Rachel Small’s shot from distance forced Elliot into a good save, and soon she had to deny Arnot’s shot.
Late on, Rangers finally managed to get a shot on target. A free-kick eventually fell to Chelsie Watson whose shot was stopped by Jenna Fife’s good save.
But it was still Hibs who looked the most likely to score with stand-in captain Siobhan Hunter heading wide from a corner.
And then, in the 90th minute, Hibs made it 5-0. Harrison cut the ball back across the six-yard box to Katey Turner, and the ex-Rangers forward scored.
