Gareth Evans has announced Scotland Under-19s squad that will take part in the 2017 UEFA Women’s Under-19 Championship Elite Round qualifiers in April.
The games, hosted by the Republic of Ireland, will see Scotland take on Ireland, Finland and Ukraine.
The biggest talking point will undoubtedly the inclusion of Chelsea’s Erin Cuthbert in the squad, especially with Scotland’s senior team playing Belgium in a friendly two days after the final game. However, she did captain the side in the Qualifying Round back in September.
Recently, Scotland Under-19 took part in the Ten Nations Tournament in La Manga. Scotland lost twice, but impressively picked up a goalless draw against France.
The group’s First Seeds, Finland, won all of their three games in the Qualifying Group: beating Kazakhstan 7-0, the Faroe Islands 8-0 and Iceland 3-0. Juuli Ketola scored five goals in the three games, making her Finland’s top scorer.
The Republic of Ireland is the group’s second seeds, having won their Qualifying Group with three wins – including a 10-0 victory over Macedonia. Leanne Kiernan is their top scorer so far, scoring six goals in the campaign to date.
Scotland controversially finished second in their group. After beating Albania 11-0 and Cyprus 8-0, Scotland was unable to play their third game due to illness. Controversially, UEFA awarded the win to Serbia with the SFA controversially not appealing the decision. Erin Cuthbert’s five goals make her Scotland’s top scorer in the campaign so far.
Fourth-seeds Ukraine were runners-up in their Qualifying Group. They won their opening game against Azerbaijan 2-1 before beating Latvia 5-2. However, they lost their final game against Spain 5-0, meaning they finished with a negative goal-difference. Yuliia Shevchuk and Nataliia Hryb have both scored two goals, making them Ukraine’s top scorer in the campaign so far.
