2017 SWPL Cup Quarter-Finals

The draw for the 2017 SWPL Cup Quarter-Finals has taken place, and the draw is as follows:

  • Hibernian (SWPL 1) v Rangers (SWPL 1)
  • Glasgow City (SWPL 1) v Stirling University (SWPL1)
  • Celtic (SWPL 1) v Hearts (SWPL 2)
  • Spartans (SWPL 1) v Aberdeen (SWPL1)/Glasgow Girls (SWPL 2)

The ties will take place on 26th March 2017.

Holders Face Repeat Of 2016 Semi-Final

On route to winning the 2016 SWPL Cup, Hibernian faced Rangers in the Semi-Final. Then, they won the game 4-1 thanks to a double from Abi Harrison and goals from Lizzie Arnot and Sarah Ewens.

Hibs progressed to the Quarter-Finals this season after beating East Fife 6-0, whilst Rangers were victorious in an epic 8-3 win over Edinburgh University Hutchison Vale.

City Host Stirling

The six-time winners of the SWPL Cup Glasgow City face a difficult Quarter-Final, hosting Stirling University. Stirling was one of the stand-out performers from last season, and although they are yet to beat City – they have the ability to cause the SWPL 1 champions issues. Last season, on the opening day of the SWPL 1, City struggled to break down Stirling.

Glasgow City convincingly defeated Jeanfield Swifts 8-0, whilst Stirling University also picked up an impressive victory, beating Buchan 7-1.

Spartans Await Either Aberdeen or Glasgow Girls

There is one more SWPL Cup First Round game to be played, with Aberdeen playing Glasgow Girls this Sunday. Aberdeen had a challenging 2016 and found themselves in the relegation battle in the SWPL 1. Whilst, Glasgow Girls came within two points of winning the SWPL 2 title and promotion to the top flight.

Whoever wins that match will travel to Spartans who defeated Motherwell in the First Round. Spartans are past winners of the tournament, lifting the trophy in the 2006-07 season when they were known as Edinburgh Saints.

Hearts Travel To Celtic

Currently, the only SWPL 2 side guaranteed to be in the Quarter-Finals is Hearts who knocked out Hamilton Academical 3-0. Their reward is a difficult trip to one of the favourites for the cup Celtic.

Celtic reached the Quarter-Finals with a hard-fought win over Forfar Farmington.
