The first season of the new SWPL leagues has been a hugely successful one – we can see the increased competition in both leagues quite clearly in what has been a brilliant season. As well as securing our first ever commercial partner. Seeing Hibernian compete at home against Bayern Munich was also a stand out – the largest paid gate at a women’s game in Scotland. As ever Glasgow City continued their dominance of the SWPL, but not without a strong challenge from Hibernian. The League and Scottish Cup finals not only showcased two fantastic sides, but also the individuals who have grown to become hugely talented players, many of which will be part of Anna Signeul’s squad for the Euros in the Netherlands in July. 2017 promises to be an exciting year for women’s football in Scotland.
SSE’s sponsorship of the Scottish Women’s Cup in 2016 until 2020 marks the start of an exciting relationship with SSE and one which we are really looking forward to developing.
Our shared vision as ever is that every women and girl who wants to play football should have the opportunity and in 2017 we will be aiming to grow the awareness and participation, working closely with the Scottish FA.
