Two late goals from Caitlin Wilson saw Bayside Under-13s beat Hibernian Under-13s to the SWF Under-13 Cup. In an even game, the heroics of Bayside’s keeper Alicia Yates kept them in the tie before their captain’s Wilson scored the crucial goals.
It was Bayside who started the final the stronger, controlling possession and pressing Hibs high up the pitch, but it would take until the 11th minute for the first attempt when Mya Bates shot just wide of the right post. And then quick feet from Carys Allan found herself room to shoot but her effort just went over.
But Hibernian started to get back into the tie, with their chances falling to Tegan Bowie. Her first chance came from her own making where her powerful shot forced Yates into a good save, before shooting just wide from a similar distance.
They could have scored when Katy Pollock’s corner found Carys Grieve at the near post, but her chested effort was well held by Yates.
And then Hibs took the lead through a bit of magic. Bowie used her quick feet to beat a couple of Bayside players before breaking towards the goal and placing the ball past the keeper.
Hibs were starting to find more room to pass the ball around in the final third and Grieve was unlucky to shoot wide from the edge of the box.
However, Bayside then equalised with two minutes remaining in the first half. Caitlin Wilson’s shot drew a great save from Grace Mitchell but Grace Dewar was there to force the ball over the line at the far post.
In the opening minute of the second half, a lovely passing move opened up the Bayside defence and Eildih Mcewan shot just wide.
Soon after, Bayside had a decent chance of their own but Allan’s effort missed the target.
The game seemed to enter a period of stalemate with neither side willing to make an error but as the half grew, Hibernian started to find more space in Bayside’s half starting when Grieve’s shot forced Yates into a good save. And then Bowie was allowed to run through the middle and was only denied her second goal by a great save by Yates’ legs.
Hibs nearly took the lead through an own goal when Katy Pollock’s corner took a large deflection off Bates, but Yates was alert to tip the ball over the bar.
Once again, Bowie found space to run into and once again, Yates was there to make the save.
And those saves from Yates proved crucial as Bayside scored twice late on. A Hibs’ pass-back found its way to the keeper, and Wilson was there to charge down the clearance and score into the empty net.
Then, to stop any chance of a late equaliser, Wilson picked up the ball around the half-way line, ran behind the defence and blasted the ball past the keeper.
