There’s an Edinburgh derby in the SWPL 1 as Spartans host a Hibernian side facing a battle to remain in the title race.
Spartans, though, should not be written off in the equation. They have been a side in transition with the new management of Suzy Shepherd, and they are on course for finishing in fourth, perhaps a place or two higher. Spartans are becoming a difficult team to beat. Before Sunday’s defeat to Celtic, they went four games unbeaten and during that run, they did beat Glasgow City.
That is something Hibernian have failed to in the league, and they suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to City last Sunday to fall five points behind their rivals. That defeat is not terminal, but they can’t afford any more slip-ups. Hibs need to beat City in their final game against them and hope their rivals slip up somewhere else. This is one Edinburgh derby they cannot fail to win if their ambitions are to remain.
Earlier in the season, Hibs beat Spartans 4-0.
