Excelsior Stadium, 21 August 2016, Kick-Off: 1pm
The SWPL 1 leaders and champions Glasgow City host a Rangers side that has hit a good run of form in a Glasgow derby.
Glasgow City. Are they about to write themselves into the Scottish record books (again) by winning their tenth title in a row? Something that has not happened in the top flight of either the women’s or men’s game? After losing the SWPL Cup Final and then that shock loss to Spartans, there were doubts. Now after beating Hibs 4-0, less so. But what those results show is anything can happen, and City now they can’t take their foot off the pedal. They need to win and keep Hibernian under immense pressure.
That will be difficult against Rangers. Before the break, you may have jumped at the chance to play them as they lost five games in a row and dropped down to fifth place. Not anymore. They’ve won two games, back to back, without conceding a goal and look like they can challenge for a minimum of fourth place. If they can take the confidence from those results into today’s match, then, they could make things difficult for City. The key will be getting off to a good start.
Earlier in the season, Glasgow City beat Rangers 3-0. It was that defeat that starts Rangers’ poor run of form before the break. And in the Scottish Women’s Cup Third Round, City beat Rangers 3-1.
