Hutchison Vale 0-3 Buchan: Ruthless Buchan Defeat Hutchie – Match Report – SWPL 2

Buchan showed a clinical nature in front of goal as they managed to beat Hutchison Vale 3-0 to close the gap on the top five teams.  They capitalised on a defensive error from the home side to allow Shelley Sutherland to open the scoring before captain’s Leanne Reid’s deflected free-kick doubled their advantage. Late on in the first half, Hutchie were reduced to ten players when Yasemin Emek was shown a straight red for a late challenge.

They say 2-0 is the most dangerous scoreline in football, but Buchan ignored that saying and made it 3-0 when Lydia Johnston calmly rounded the Hearts’ keeper to score.

Both sides had chances to score but Buchan held on to secure an impressive victory – a repeat of the match between the two sides back in March.

First Half

The game had a scrappy start but it was Buchan who had the game’s first chance, and it was characteristic of the start. Buchan worked a throw into the Hutchie box to Jo Murphy who was immediately closed down by the home side’s defenders, and she could only stab the ball wide.

And then Buchan took the lead when a poor Hutchison Vale back-pass allowed Sophie Anderson to play a long ball to Shelley Sutherland who scored.

The home side nearly found an equaliser when Beth MacLeod dribbled through the Buchan defence, but her shot was saved by Jodie Kennedy. Soon after, Ashley Fish had a chance to equalise but off-balance, she shot wide.

Hutchie were on top and Nichola Sturrock’s stunning cross-field ball picked out Fish at the far post, but she couldn’t hit the target. And then MacLeod cut off the wing and forced Kennedy into a stunning save to tip it wide.

Against the run of play, Buchan doubled their lead. Having won a free-kick 30 yards from goal, Leanne Reid tried her luck and aided by a deflection off the wall, she beat Hearts’ keeper Charlotte Parker-Smith.

The home side didn’t give up and Fish could have scored once again, but this time shooting across goal, Kennedy made a good save.

Buchan could have further extended their lead and it came from a free-kick from a similar position to their second goal, but this time, Reid’s effort was tipped around the post low down by Parker-Smith.

Hutchison Vale came close to pulling a goal back when a free-kick was cleared to Margaux Durand-Watson whose shot was going in, only for Kennedy to deny her with an outstanding save.

The Edinburgh side’s chances were made harder when in the 41st minute, they were reduced to ten players when Yasemin Emek was shown a straight red card for a late challenge on Lydia Johnston.

Second Half

Hutchison Vale started the second half strongly, and their Trialist tried her luck from 30 yards, but her curled effort was an easy save for Kennedy.

But Buchan then made it 3-0. Hutchie’s defence was expecting the offside flag to be raised when Silcocks’ through-ball picked out Lydia Johnston and she calmly rounded the keeper before finishing.

Hutchie had a couple of chances to pull a goal back soon after with Durand-Watson shooting over from the edge of the box and their Trialist having a long-range effort saved.

Fish came close once again, cutting off the wing and into the box but her shot found the side-netting.

The home side were centimetres from scoring in the 63rd minute. A corner was played short to the Trialist and she curled the ball towards the far post. Kennedy thought the ball was going wide, but she could only watch as the ball curled and hit the inside the post and safe.

Hutchie came close again through MacLeod whose silky skill down the left wing allowed her to break into the box, but her shot was well saved.

Buchan should have made it 4-0. Shelley Sutherland’s cross picked out Karen Emslie, who had just come on a minute before, and she shot over from 10 yards. And the visitors could have scored a spectacular fourth when Sutherland shot from 35 yards and she was denied only by a stunning save from Parker-Smith.

Late on, Hutchie could have pulled a goal back when a right-wing cross picked out MacLeod but her shot was superbly saved by Kennedy.
