Spartans 3-1 Stirling University

spartans 3-1 stirling

Spartans ended a run of three defeats in all competitions as they beat 10-woman Stirling University 3-1. Stirling had arrived at Ainslie Park, full of confidence after beating Celtic the previous weekend.

And it was Stirling who started the brighter, with Jade Gallon and Nicole Pullar creating several chances in the opening ten minutes.

But it was Spartans who took the lead. Louise Mason was brought down in the box, and Alana Marshall stepped up and converted the penalty. They could have doubled their lead minutes later, but Mason’s shot was bravely saved by the Stirling keeper.

And Spartans did make it 2-0 when a dangerous cross was tapped in by Michelle Russell.

Rachel Donaldson had a chance to pull a goal back for Stirling early in the second half, but her shot was well saved by Spartans’ keeper Eartha Cumings.

And then, Stirling did get a goal through Lisa Sutherland’s 30-yard wonder strike which gave Cumings absolutely no chance.

But Stirling’s chances of finding an equaliser were made harder as Rebecca Galbraith was shown a straight red for a poor challenge.

Spartans thought they had reinstated their two-goal advantage when Danni Pagliarulo’s shot was saved, and Russell pounced on the rebound, only for it to be ruled offside.

However, Spartans kept pushing for the third and came close through a Marshall free-kick that went agonisingly over.

And then, in the 87th minute, Spartans did make it 3-1 when Mason broke into the box, and although she saw her shot saved, Russell was there to score a tap-in.

The win sees Spartans move up into fourth, whilst Stirling remains in sixth.
