Station Park, Kick-Off: 1pm
Top meets Bottom meet Eighth at Station Park.
Forfar is one of two teams in the whole SWPL structure who have yet to pick up a point, and for a second Sunday in a row, they host of the top-two SWPL 1 clubs. It is far too early to judge Forfar’s season, simply because they’ve only played one side (Spartans) where they realistically could be expected to beat. And in that match, when they equalised with Spartans, they had a player sent off. But with eight teams in the league, Forfar need to become competitive in these matches if they are to stay up.
They showed in their last match, a 3-1 defeat to Hibernian, that they are improving on that matter. This came soon after a 6-0 loss to Hibs in the SWP League Cup Quarter-Final. But, on Sunday, they face a Glasgow City side that is five points clear at the top of the table.
Their lead at the moment is slightly artificial, due to the fact they’ve played one extra game than second place Hibernian, but what is true is that City looks incredibly hard to break down.
Glasgow City has now played six competitive matches in the 2016 season and has won all six games without conceding a single goal. With several key players leaving the Champions and the club putting trust in young prospects, people looked at City’s early league results with interest. Unlike their usual free-scoring style, they won each of their opening three games 1-0 – although they were all against tricky oppositions (Stirling University, Celtic and Aberdeen).
But, the match against Wednesday put any doubts to the sidelines after they thrashed an impressive Spartans side 8-0 – and the scoreline could have been greater.
The one game between the sides last season was also played in Forfar and was won by Glasgow City 8-1. This was just one of the 11 goals City conceded in the 2015 SWPL season.
A win could see Forfar move up to sixth, whilst City will remain in first, whatever the result.
